Keith's Story

How would it feel to give up your friends, your home, and your familiarity to move to another state to finally have a "family"?

My caseworker had been trying to find a permanent family for me for so long that I didn't believe it would ever happen.

In many ways I was scared to be adopted. Luckily my foster parents realized that I had a lot of questions and uncertainties about adoption and took me to Kinship House. The counselors let me express myself and helped me to understand that it was normal to have different emotions about adoption. They also told me that my new adoptive parents would accept my feelings and emotions, and still love me.

One day my new parents came to visit me from another state and I introduced them to all my friends, showed them around my school, and introduced them to my foster parents and counselors at Kinship House. My new parents brought pictures of their house and neighborhood and a video of people in their state who were looking forward to meeting me. Even though I didn't know any of them, I could already tell that they wanted to love me.

It was hard saying good-bye to my friends and foster family. But I'm also excited about finally having a family of my own.
